The Indian River Lagoon (IRL) runs along nearly one third of the eastern coast of Florida. The IRL is an extremely unique body of water that contains over 10,000 species of plants and animals. When fishing in the lagoon, anglers and cast net fishermen alike can find a variety fish such as the spotted seatrout and black drum. The IRL is the spawning grounds for many different species of fish and the Wild Ocean fishermen are lucky to be near enough to see them every day.

Eugene McCormick is one of our cast net fishermen who has worked with us for over 8 years. Gene fishes in the IRL using a cast net that weighs about 15 lbs.  A cast net or throw net is a net with small weights around its edge. The net is thrown and spreads as it sinks in the water. The fish are caught as the fisherman pulls the net up. Gene’s “Popeye Arms” are proof of the hard work and dedication he puts into his fishing skills (he throws that cast net at least 100 times a day!).

Occasionally you’ll find Gene’s son, Shawn, out fishing with his dad. Shawn’s love for fishing inspired Gene to start a fishing club in Merritt Island High School in Brevard County and Shawn has even been in fishing tournaments! We think it’s great that these two bond while fishing and get to participate in these tournaments, but we get the most joy when we see that big smile every time Shawn catches a fish at our dock in Port Canaveral!

The Gulf Stream transports nearly four billion cubic feet of water per second, an amount greater than that carried by all of the world’s rivers combined, and the

average speed of the stream is about 4 miles per hour. With this large amount of water and speed, the Gulf Stream is like a highway for fish. Many of our fishermen go on trips to the Gulf from 1 to 4 weeks long to catch shrimp such as Royal Reds which are found in waters as deep as 500 ft! Many of their boats have freezing tanks on board, so as soon as the shrimp is caught it is flash frozen to preserve freshness. We love our fishermen and work with them to ensure fresh, high-quality seafood.

Wild Ocean and our fishermen are dedicated to providing the freshest seafood around and we are happy to be able to deliver our high-quality product to seafood lovers across the nation!
